First off, We want to say congratulations!! From the moment the big question is popped until the moment you walk down the aisle, there is so much planning that goes into your wedding day! Part of your photography experience is your engagement session! We love engagement sessions because they are a great way to get to know both of us, and to get comfortable with us before we show up to photograph your big day! At your engagement session, we will share stories, jokes, and have an all around great time!
By the time you reach your wedding day, you will be a pro in front of the camera!
One of the questions we hear the most from our couples is how to prepare for an engagement session, so here are some steps to make sure that you are prepared and excited about your session!
1. What to Wear. Most of our couples choose two outfits; a dressier outfit, and one that is more casual. There is no such thing as “too dressed up” for engagement photos, so do not be afraid to have some fun! When choosing colors for your photos we recommend selecting soft and muted shades vs. bright and bold shades. The camera loves shades of soft pinks and muted blues, mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like gray, cream, beige, and white. By avoiding ultra bright and bold colors, you ensure your photos will look stunning in every environment!
In our experience, you may have an area of your body that they are self-conscious about, so recognizing what area that is in advance is key! Choosing clothing that flatters your silhouette (like three quarter length sleeves), and colors that complement your natural features is the best way to ensure you will love the way you look in your photos!
For the ladies, romantic dresses and skirts look stunning because they really flatter the body, especially when combined with a fun necklace or scarf! Consider softer fabrics like chiffon and tulle, which allow for beautiful movements. For shirts, pick a three quarter length, or full length sleeved shirt with soft colors and materials like linen, cotton or chiffon! Sweaters, cardigans, and scarfs are always great details and layers to add.
For the men, we recommend long fitted pants, dress shoes, and a sport coat or suit jacket for a sophisticated and masculine look. Solid shades of gray or navy are a strong compliment to most women’s outfits. Bowties, cool socks, belts, tie clips, suspenders, vests, and watches are sharp compliments to any outfit. For your more casual outfit, we recommend that your coordinate instead of match!
2. Be On Time. This is really important! What most of our couples do not realize is that natural light photography is 100% dependent on the sun, so if you’re late, you risk loosing that magic light during your session!
3. Pamper Yourself! Some brides choose to have their makeup and hair done professionally for their engagement session. Its always fun when our brides get a little pampering before their session! Take advantage of this time to get your nails done, and schedule that blowout! Last but not least, we will be taking a few ring shots, so it’s always a good idea to give your ring some TLC to really make it shine!
4. Have Fun! As you’re preparing for your engagement session, remember that we don’t expect you to be a pro at this! Relax, have fun, and don’t be nervous! It’s going to be a great shoot, and we’re going to have a blast!!
